Takahē were once deemed extinct, only to be rediscovered in 1948 by Geoffrey Orbell. The species were brought back from the edge, now there are 500 members.

Takahē are a member of the rail family, boosting to be the largest species in NZ. They are flightless and can live up to 16 years in the wild.
